1990

・3-year RI PPE pilot program launched

・4 emphases: Flora, Fauna, Air Pollution, Water Resources

・Formation of a subcommittee to explore environmental initiatives within Rotary.

1993

・RI Board encourages all District Governors to appoint District PPE Coordinators.

・Purpose: Strengthen environmental focus and support clubs in engaging with sustainability projects.

1999-2000

・Extension of the RI PPE program to continue supporting environmental initiatives.

・Paulo Costa passes away, but his vision for environmental preservation continues

2015-16

・D3450 RC HK South petitioned to RI Board on adopting environmental policies & recommended clubs to appoint PPE Directors*

・This action was documented in the minutes of the January 2016 RI Board of Directors Meeting,

2020

・RI Board of Directors and Rotary Foundation Trustees approve a new area of focus: the environment.

・Past RI President Ian H.S. Riseley acknowledges alignment with Costa’s vision.

2021

Global Grants accept applications for Supporting the Environment projects

The following primary goals have been set since the RI PPE committee was formed in 1990:

  • Promote greater awareness among all Rotarians of the critical environmental issues affecting their communities, countries, and the world.
  • Increase the number and diversity of environmental service projects and workshops carried out by clubs and districts;
  • Incorporate environmental components in all Rotary service to ensure that these projects support sustainable development
  • Develop worldwide a public image of Rotary clubs as environmental advocates within their communities.
  • Identify reputable environmental groups with Rotary clubs and districts may coordinate effective environmental projects.
